Digital thoughts from a seasoned programmer About

2025 Review

By Matt Raffel on January 02, 2026

So what happened in the last year?  ...Here's my recap of some important things to me.

This blog is one the fruition of one of my goals for last year, in that I wanted to start writing a bit more about tech stuff I observe, experience etc.   I have written over 30 posts in the last year and I will talk a bit more about that in a moment.  I have found this experience enjoyable.   I hope you have enjoyed reading my posts, as well.

Unconvential Bits

Unconvential Bits (this blog) is focused on engineering. Sometimes I write about technology. Lately, more of my content is about effectiveness of engineering, as a team and in the wider organization.   Surprisingly, one my most popular posts was "Call me a devil. I did something kind of mean" detailing a slightly devlish checkin I made at work.  I think it is kinda humorous but it is also informative of how we can incorrectly use tools as well.

Management, team and process were the most widely used tags for my posts.  I will continue to write about those topics and I hope to added more posts about my own programming experiences as well.

Coding

I started this blog by creating the engine itself and, this go around, I chose blazor/C# as the tech stack.  Over the course of the last year, I have added many quite a few updates since the start of this project.  Some are pretty cool, I think.   I won't restate those updates here as they are fairly well documented in the github repo.  I wanted to highlight, the project/code for the blog has a been an on going endeavor which I have also found enjoyable.

I also created my own MP3 player application for android devices.  I call it Sonus Levis.  The name is a derivative name from the latin phrase for Sound Light.  Someone thought levis was meant the brand of pants, so humorously I refer to Sonus Levis as music pants among those closer to me.

My reason for creating my own app started with my frustration level with the vendor I was using.  Between the quality issues and constant bombardment to upgrade to their subscription services, I felt it was time to find another app.  The apps I found on the app store or through reviews had ads or other payments needed, so I created Sonus-Levis.  I use it every day.  For me, it works great and I have some ideas to extend the utility of Sonus Levis as well.

If I can get 12 people into the test stream and write a review,  I will publish this app on the store.  I promise to keep the app ad free and intend it to be available freely--unless there are some costs I am not aware of for offering this app on the store.  I want people to enjoy listening to music.  I think Sonus Levis is a great way to enjoy hours of uninterrupted music.

2026

I intend to focus most of my side project work on my next game.  There's not a lot of public information on it and that will change as progress becomes visible.

I would really like to get sonus levis public in the app store.  I hope you can help me with that.   Please let me know.

Looking forward to another year in technology.
