Why I Took a Tech Detox (and Why You Should Too)
It’s been a couple of weeks since my last post, and yes, that was intentional. I took a break.
Not just any break, mind you—a real break. I stepped away from anything tech-related. Okay, fine, I spent a couple of hours playing Civilization VI, but otherwise, I swore off all things tech-related. Other than my brief foray into world domination, I didn’t write a single line of code. I didn't comtemplate my project. I didn’t mull over managing teams or strategize about software development lifecycles. Nada.
And you know what? It was glorious.
Why Breaks Matter
People need breaks. Full stop. It’s not just some fluffy wellness buzzword; it’s science—or at least my personal experience. Which brings me to my main point: why don’t more companies in the tech industry (or any industry, really) make the week between Christmas and New Year’s a company-wide holiday?
Cue the corporate chorus: “That’s what PTO is for!”
Well, my friends, I humbly disagree.
The Week That Productivity Forgot
Let me paint a picture. I’ve worked during that limbo week, and let me tell you, it’s a bizarre, almost purgatorial experience. One of two things happens:
-
I blaze through my objectives in record time because there are zero interruptions—no meetings, no Slack pings, just me and my to-do list. But then, I’m left staring at the clock, wondering, Now what? the soul-crushing realization that I'm now expected to find more work?
-
I’m completely blocked because the people or resources I need are off enjoying their eggnog-induced bliss.
Either way, it’s a waste of energy, bordering on absurdity. Like trying to host a dinner party without food: what’s the point?
Why Mandatory Time Off Makes Sense
Here’s the thing: expecting employees to burn their PTO during the holidays feels wrong. Engineers—and everyone, for that matter—deserve a collective pause. It’s not just about resting; it’s about recharging. Imagine returning to work refreshed, morale high, ready to tackle challenges instead of dragging yourself to your desk like a post-apocalyptic zombie.
If I ever have the power to make this happen, you’d better believe I will. A tech detox for all!
My Tech Detox
As for me, my break isn’t quite over yet. I’m still basking in the glow of my tech-free(ish) holiday, resisting the siren call of my IDE. When I do come back, I’ll be ready to dive headfirst into the chaos of code with fresh energy—and maybe a little more sanity.
Until then, may your inbox stay empty, your Slack quiet, and your Civilization VI conquests mighty.
