Why does this wear me out so much
Lately I’ve seen a lot of posts wondering if C# is no longer a Microsoft priority because they ported/reimplemented TypeScript and Copilot in Rust. I don’t see the connection. But that’s less the point.
There are other posts like “Is DSA dead?” or “Is knowing how to code in {whatever language} dead?” OMG.
It’s been my belief for a very long time that our industry has had a very unhealthy view of what are the attributes for success in software engineering. The laser focus on the ability to write DSA from memory, ability to remember specific nuances of a syntax, "in-depth" experience with specific libraries used, and so on was never the primary skill a developer needed.
An if statement is pretty much the same no matter what language. Any engineer can figure out what a library does. Outside of a few edge cases, DSA was never the reason a product succeeded or failed.
Can we move on from this very poor level of thinking, please?
I think AI is finally making it obvious that the best engineers know how to solve problems and recognize a good solution over a not-so-good one. And the rest of it? They can learn if needed.
