Speed+Quality = Yes you can
Can you delivery software fast and with quality? I believe you can. I believe the problem with fast is most people only look at the calendar. You are not fast if what you deliver misses the mark.
To understand how to be successful at fast quality delivery, you first have to change the definition of fast. As I said above, the calender alone cannot be the sole metric for fast. The defintion must include that quality component.
Some might say "then that means you won't deliver fast". I disagree. It's not fast if its not quality work. I am going to expand on this in a future post. It includes F1 racing. Stay tuned! I think you find it interesting.
However, back to my point, let's take a look a silly and even stupid example. I am suppose to deliver an invoice report. And I need to get done "as quickly as possible". So I make an invoice report--pretty obvious it lists invoices right? Push it to production. End user says its wrong. So I fix what they said was wrong and repeat the steps until the end user says this is good enough.
Did I deliver fast? I think the answer there is more nuianced--yes, fast but a lot of time was wasted too because what was delivered was wrong more than it was right.
As quickly as possible is a calender only focus. It says nothing what is to be delivered or how it will be measured as successfully develiered. So if your focus is just getting out quickly, you won't quality. It's probably a newtonian law at this point. To get what you need and want, fast, you have to change your thinking of how you achieve it. It's only fast if you successfully deliver, meeting the exact expectations.
If you are delivering and meeting expecations it's fast. Otherwise you're going slow.
